Project Overview

The Bone Biopsy Device was developed as part of my Bachelor’s Thesis Project (BTP) in Electrical Engineering at IITRAM. The project focuses on combining mechanical systems, sensors, and intelligent algorithms to assist in delicate medical procedures.

The system uses a load cell sensor with an HX711 amplifier to measure the force experienced by the biopsy needle during insertion. This data is continuously analyzed using a moving average–based algorithm to detect different stages of bone penetration. When specific force patterns indicate that the needle has reached a critical point, the device can automatically control the stepper motor to stop or reverse movement, preventing excessive penetration.

The project involved designing both the hardware architecture and control logic, including sensor integration, motor control, and algorithm development. By introducing data-driven feedback into the biopsy process, the device aims to enhance procedural accuracy and support safer clinical outcomes.
